Marble sculpture which depicts a mature women with high cheekbones, wide eyes, and an idealized face shape. Her head is adored with a high ribbed cap decorated with a diadem of pearls and an oval gem at the center. The work, identified as Empress Theodora, wife of Justinian, demonstrates the impersonal depiction of imperial power and the attention to her individual beauty.
