This painting by Mary Crittenden, titled Journey, shows two children walking from the darkness into the light. It seems as if these children are walking out an intimidating circumstance, as the trees and branches included in the painting have a claw-like appearance. Since I am focusing on Christianity in Modern Art, I wanted to show the portrayal of God. Many pieces, especially including this one, depict God as being a reliable and guiding figure. He is typically portrayed as a light, which is very distinct from the other dark images, thus creating a large contrast. The children in this image are also holding Bibles and are clearly ignoring the darkness that is completely surrounding them. This realistic image truly does show that if people keep their focus on the light (the portrayal of God), they cannot go wrong in their faith. They must keep a clear path to the Lord, as the end result would be completely worth it since they would be closer to God. This image is coupled with an excerpt from Psalms, stating, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path” ( Psalms 119:105). I found this paring to be very inspirational since it discusses the light vs. dark imagery, as well as the concept of how there will always be light upon the path of God.
