Garnet: LAF112

Item

Title
Garnet: LAF112
Description
Large, clear colored grains, with slight pink hue. Garnet grains display relatively high positive relief, and display no pleochroism due to the mineral's isotropic nature. No cleavage is present, but grains may indicate crystal growth form (often round shapes in thin section). In XPL the grains are totally extinct, due to the isotropic nature of garnet.

Occurence: “Pyrope is generally limited to ultramafic igneous rocks. Almandine-rich garnet is the typical garnet in mica schist and gneiss. Grossular and andradite are typical garnets found in metamorphosed carbonate-rich rocks associated with calcite, dolomite, tremolite, diopside, wollastonite, and epidote. Hydrogrossular is an uncommon variety found in metamorphosed carbonate rocks.” (Nesse, 2012)
