The painting represents the story after the crucifixion of Christ where some of the Apostles invite a man to dinner with them, and he blesses and breaks the bread, and the apostles come to realize that it is Christ resurrected. Caravaggio utilized realism in accordance with the reforms created at the Council of Trent.
