An indigenous Atayal group/family of farmers, indicated by their attire and adornments, stand in a line to pose for a photo. Direct separation of and distinctions between “rural” and “urban” settings helped reinforce the exotic and uncultured image the Japanese empire aimed to attach to indigenous Taiwanese communities.
