Description
-
This wooden fragment was somehow
separated from the larger coffin it belonged
to. Hand painted on the wooden fragment
are Egyptian hieroglyphs. Not much is known
about this particular item.
Coffins, or more correctly known as
sarcophagus, were made for the dead to
prepare them for the afterlife. Coffins were
often an item reserved for royalty but
transitioned to be for a more generalized
population over time.
The British stole large amounts of Egyptian
artifacts in the late 1800s to early 1900s and
dispersed them across the globe.
On December 21st, 2005, Lafayette College
was “gifted” the coffin fragment from Dr.
Dominic Mariano. It is unknown where Dr.
Mariano acquired the item from.
