This site introduces 6 of 20 karuta (Japanese game) card sets held as part of the East Asia Image Collection in the Special Collections Department of Lafayette College Library. With the exception of the Foreign Geography Karuta for Study or Hobby (学習用趣味の地理かるた外国) set, all other cards held at Lafayette were generously donated by Mr. Richard Mammana, a scholar of Japanese history.

Half of the card games held at Lafayette are karuta games featuring the 100 Patriotic Poems (愛国百人一首), while the other half are cards specifically created for children and include themes of military and war vocabulary, national and international geography and history and moralistic cautions for children in wartime Japan. The cards are rich in visual and historical information, and this online exhibit is being developed for the beginning Japanese language student, students of history and Japanese culture and the advanced culture and history scholar alike.

The Lafayette College 2016-2017 Andrew W. Mellon and CLIR postdoctoral fellow, Michaela Kelly, selected and scanned karuta cards, and built this Omeka site with the support of Dr. Charlotte Nunes. Undergraduate student Brittany Dobson (Lafayette College Class of 2019) offered assistance with scanning tasks. Rika Kamiyasu (Lafayette College Class of 2020) transcribed most of the 100 Patriotic Poems and their English translations, as well as offering her tireless work organizing the physical cards in Special Collections. Paul Miller created the composite images and derivatives used on the site, corrected color and renumbered the cards several times as Michaela changed her mind and found errors. Adam Malantonio was always ready to give advice about metadata exporting and created the wonderful widget that allows visitors to the 'Karuta Across Time and Space' exhibit and the 'Karuta Game' page to try matching a few of the karuta cards themselves. このサイトでは、ラファエット大学図書館の特別コレクション課に入っている東アジアイメージコレクションに所蔵されている20のカルタセットのうちの6つを紹介しています。古本屋に購入した学習用趣味の地理かるた 外国のセット以外のカルタは全て、日本史研究者のリチャード・ママンナ氏による寄付品です。

 ラファイエットで所蔵されているカルタセットの半数は『愛国百人一首』の詩を載せたもので、残り半分は、戦時中の子供向けカルタであり、軍用と戦争語彙、国内外の地理、歴史、道徳的文句が含まれています。  カルタは、視覚的かつ歴史的な情報が豊富で、初めて日本語を学ぶ学生や、歴史と日本の文化を勉強している学生、そして先進的な文化と歴史の学者のためにこのサイトが開かれています。

Michaela Kelly (ラファイエット大学の2016-2017 Andrew W. MellonとCLIRポストドック)がこのサイトに紹介されているカルタを選択してスキャンし、Dr. Charlotte Nunesの支援をいただき、このOmekaサイトを創りました。 学部生のBrittany Dobsonさん（2019年卒業予定）は、スキャン作業の支援を提供しました。 学部生の上安莉華さん（2020卒業予定）は『愛国百人一首』の詩と本田氏の英訳を書き起こし、特別コレクション課で20のカルタセットを絶えずに整理してくださいました。Paul Millerさんはサイトで使用されている札の複合画像とjpeg derivativesを作成し、色を修正してカードに番号を付け直しました。 Adam Malantonioはいつもメタデータのエクスポートに関する助言をして、python scriptを教えて下さいました。展示の「Karuta Across Time and Space」と「カルタ遊び」の訪問者がカルタがやってみれるように、素晴らしいウィジェットを作りました。Michaelaは彼らの陽気で、慎重な支援に感謝します。
