Experience Karuta かるた体験
Now that you know how to play, give it a try!
On this page, you can try out a game of karuta.
Using this widget created by Adam Malantonio, with cards scanned from the collection, you can try your hand at matching a recitation card to its matching grabbing card from a set of ten randomly generated cards!
Each example in the game here comes from the Military Country Comic Karuta Collection, should you want to learn more about each set.
Instructions:
This karuta practice widget will randomly shuffle a set of karuta cards and display them to you with a recitation card at the top and a set of 10 grabbing cards below.
You will need to read from top to bottom, and from right to left.
So, start by looking at the top right-hand character on the recitation card, and find the matching character from amongst the grabbing cards.
Sometimes, the recitation card uses the katakana alphabet, while sometimes it starts with a Chinese kanji character. When the card starts with a kanji, you will have to work a little harder to find the corresponding grabbing card.
Looking at the example here, notice that to the right of the more complex Chinese character, there is a small, simpler character. This is the character you will want to match with a grabbing card below.
The deck will shuffle automatically only once you have matched the right grabbing card to the recitation card.
